Chatham Area Transit (CAT) plans to adopt electric vehicles and "On Demand Multimodal Transportation Systems" (ODMTS) technology, combining fixed routes with on-demand shuttles. CAT aims to refine the technology through collaboration with Georgia Tech and the Partnership for Inclusive Innovation (PIN), while securing Planning and Programming grant funds.

On-Demand Multimodal Transit Systems - Why Savannah

In Chatham County, 14.4 percent of all households are at or below the poverty level and 7.3 percent have no vehicle available. 91.8 percent of Chatham County’s population having access to a smartphone, utilizing an application on these phones to increase access to microtransit could significantly expand the reach of transit service for all residents, but especially lower income residents. Further, job growth in our area including the $5.5 billion, 8100+ job Hyundai Metaplant, as a fully dedicated facility for EV electric manufacturing, offers tremendous opportunity for our residents and the economy. It is adjacent to our proposed SMART prototype area.

IMPACT

  • Alignment with USDOT Strategy: CAT's stage 1 SMART proposal strategically aligns with the FY 2022-2026 US Department of Transportation (USDOT) Strategic Plan and adheres to USDOT Innovation Principles.
  • Digital Transformation of Transit Services: The proposal focuses on enhancing adaptability and resilience in transit service models, with a key objective of transitioning legacy systems into the digital age.
  • Inclusivity through Internship Program: CAT demonstrates inclusivity by supporting a one-year internship program with HBCU Savannah State University's engineering program, contributing to diversity in the transportation sector.
  • Investment in Future Professionals: Beyond addressing immediate transit needs, CAT's initiative invests in the future by developing the next generation of transportation professionals, particularly from underrepresented backgrounds. This approach reflects a comprehensive commitment to advancing mobility and fostering innovation.

MISSION

  • The overarching goal is to establish a lasting and efficient system that seamlessly integrates Electric Vehicles (EVs) into our transportation landscape. Innovative Charging Algorithms: The initiative focuses on advanced charging algorithms to optimize the EV charging process, ensuring timely and convenient recharging while maximizing energy efficiency.
  • Door-to-Door Requests Integration: The system incorporates door-to-door requests, streamlining the entire user experience from initial reservation to the final destination, enhancing convenience throughout the journey.
  • Multi-Modal Integration: The concept promotes multi-modal trips, seamlessly integrating various transportation modes beyond point-to-point travel. This approach enhances flexibility and sustainability, reflecting a commitment to diverse and eco-friendly transportation options.
  • Holistic Approach to Sustainable Urban Mobility: The envisioned system not only meets practical EV user needs but also aligns with broader goals of sustainable urban mobility. It reflects a holistic approach to transportation planning and management, contributing to environmentally friendly and efficient city transport systems.

On-Demand Zones

Innovation
